A mother died after her heart vessels were cut during surgery to repair a slipped disc, it emerged tonight.

Christine Burgess, 51, underwent the routine discectomy operation after suffering back pain and numbness in her legs which was diagnosed as a disc hernia.

A spokeswoman for Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘The Trust deeply regrets the death of Christine Burgess during an emergency discectomy on May 11 2006.
