Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for people with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. With COPD the airflow to the lungs is restricted (obstructed). COPD is usually caused by smoking. Symptoms include cough and breathlessness. The most important treatment is to stop smoking. Inhalers are commonly used to ease symptoms. The number of people who have COPD is on the rise — more than 12 million are currently diagnosed with it. And it is estimated that another 12 million may have COPD but not realize it.Japanese research publish a case about acupuncture treat Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),they thought:After ten acupuncture treatments over two months, patient's walking distance, Borg scale and respiratory function were improved compared with before treatment. These findings suggest that acupuncture treatment may be efficacious for advanced cases of COPD.
Really? To verify the improving effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) at Dingchuan (EX-B 1) on the pulmonary function of COPD patients at acute stage,Chinese West China Hospital Affiliated to Sichuan University has done a new research about this treatment,Their forty cases of COPD patients at acute stage were randomly divided into group A (20 cases) and group B (20 cases). TENS at Dingchuan (EX-B 1) with the frequency of 4 Hz and wave width of 200 ms was used in group A, and sham stimulation without current output at Dingchuan (EX-B 1) was used in group B.
They found the adjuvant therapeutic effect of TENS at Dingchuan (EX-B 1) with the frequency of 4 Hz and wave width of 200 ms on the pulmonary function indices of COPD patients at acute stage is not obvious.
